ChangeMan ZMF, excessive GRS memory usage and related issues

Description

 

In ZMF 8.1.2 (and some 8.1.1.01+hotfix) environments, ChangeMan ZMF altered the way in which it handled ‘third party notification’ messages. These are messages that are sent by the ZMF Server started task to ‘third parties’ who have not instigated the action that resulted in the message being issued. For example, checkout conflict notification messages caused by a concurrent checkout requested by a different user.

 

When such messages are issued, ZMF checks to see if the user to which the message is being sent is currently logged on to any LPAR within the sysplex. If they are logged on then the message is sent immediately. If they are not logged on the message is stored in the 'SEREX006-defined-prefix.MSGS' dataset and sent to the customer when they next reconnect to the ZMF server.

 

Several customers immediately encountered the issue documented on the following KB articles after implementing the new processing:

 

DEF297007/DEF297026: System hangs due to GRS memory growth

 

This issue is fully resolved in ZMF 8.1.3. ZMF 8.1.2 customers can resolve this issue by applying the urgent maintenance detailed on S141939, if they have not already done so.

 

Even after implementing this fix, a very small number of customers have continued to see excessive GRS memory usage attributable to this processing. This is often accompanied by the following IBM error messages being seen in their ZMF Server started task output or on the system log:

The IBM-documented response to these ISG* messages follows:

 

"System programmer response                                                 

                                                                          

Check the XCF communication status between the system that receives this message and the system with sysname identified in the message." 

 

And:

 

"System programmer response      

                                

Contact IBM support."                        

 

Resolution

 

After discussion with IBM, we have changed ZMF 8.1.4 processing to use the IBM SSI 80 interface to check whether users are logged on to the sysplex and removed the GRS processing for this functionality. Please note that ZMF continues to use GRS functionality in many other functions.

 

If customers running ZMF 8.1.2 or 8.1.3 are adversely affected by continued GRS memory usage problems that are attributable to ZMF after implementing the fix for DEF297007/DEF297026, and are unable to resolve the cause of the ISG377I/ISG378I messages, then they should open a support incident requesting assistance.
