Description

Many of Serena's products use the Serena License Manager to control and maintain license keys. These keys are signed with the HostID of the server where License Manager is installed. Depending on the operating system being used, this is either the MAC address of a network card, or the hardware ID of the system board. If something were to happen to your License Manager system (on a weekend for example) it is important that you be able to recover quickly, possibly without the help of Serena. If, during the recovery of your system, the HostID for the License Manager server changes, you will need a new license key which is signed with the new HostID.

Resolution

There are two recovery options available to you.

Option 1: Generate a 5 day emergency key

If the License Manager server only needs to be replaced temporarily, you can generate an emergency 5 day license. This will give you 5 days to repair the original License Manager server. After 5 days, the key will expire. You should only use this option if the original server will be repaired and reused. To generate a 5 day emergency key:

  1. Login to Serena Support.
  2. Select the Licensing tab.
  3. Select the View Demo subtab.
  4. View the demo.
NOTE: The video will tell you to press "Create Licenses". You are generating an emergency key, so press "Emergency Licenses (5-day)" instead.
  5. Apply the new license key to the server. (Detailed steps are at the bottom of this document.)

Option 2: Rehost the key

If the License Manager server needs to be replaced (or if any component of the hardware is replaced, causing the HostID value to change), you can "rehost" your existing license key. This will generate a new license key and legally invalidate the original license key.

  1. Login to Serena Support.
  2. Select the Licensing tab.
  3. Select the View Demo subtab.
  4. View the demo.
NOTE: The video will tell you to press "Create Licenses". You are generating an emergency key, so press "Move Licenses (Rehost)" instead.
  5. Apply the new license key to the server. (Detailed steps are at the bottom of this document.)

How to Apply a Disaster Recovery Key

Whether you generated a 5 day emergency key or rehosted a new key, follow these steps to apply the key to your License Server machine.

  1. Stop the Serena License Manager service.
  2. IMPORTANT: Delete the serena.lic file (by default, located in C:\Program Files\Serena\License Manager).
  3. Start the License Manager UI.
  4. Paste in the keys that were generated.
IMPORTANT: Be careful to follow the direction when copying/pasting the license key. If you get error "Invalid license key", see KB S139645.
  5. Start the Serena License Manager service.
