CMS-XML SLM: How to access the Serena License Manager through a firewall / What TCP ports are used by the Serena License Manager?
This can be done by changing the license file. This file is located in the License Manager installation directory on the server, and can be changed with a text editor. The default locations are:
CMS-XML Setting the license manager port
We have had repeated calls concerning the addition of firewall ports to the license file. The following should be added to the RM Installation notes - with a reference to the SLM Installation Guide.
CMS-XML KM-Dim10: How to Configure non-default ports for Serena License Manager
Sometimes, the ports must be set elsewhere in order to accomodate firewall rules or other needs. To change the port numbers, locate your license file, named serena.lic. In Windows environments, the default location for this is: C:\Program Files\Serena\Dimensions 10.1\SLM
CMS-XML KM-Dim7: How to get around Flexlm License Manager problems with Firewalls
To configure FLEXlm to work across Firewall, an open and available TCP port is assigned to each vendor daemon in the license file. This is done by simple adding " PORT =tcp_num" at the end of each VENDOR or DEAMON line and SERVER line inside the license file. Make sure that the each TCP port value (tcp_num) is unique for each SERVER, and VENDOR/DAEMON line(s).
CMS-XML SLM: How to configure SLM (Serena License Manager) and its clients for a redundant server environment
Additionally, add a TCP/IP port and the end of each SERVER line where the lmgrd process should run on (typically 27000). Specifying this port is required as of SLM 2.2.0, but also a good idea for previous releases. If the SLM servers will be behind a firewall , see KB doc S136346 to learn about specifying a port for the merant vendor daemon as well.
CMS-XML DimCM: LicenseManager: When trying to login to Dimensions server, getting error "License server machine is down or not responding. (-96,491)"
Regarding the error message "License server machine is down or not responding. (-96,491)", it occurs when one of these 2 ports or both ports are not opened at firewall .

If SLM needs to run on a different port , or if a fixed port is needed to access SLM through a firewall in which ports need to be explicitly opened, these changes can be made with minor modifications to the license file serena.lic. These files are located in the License Manager installation directory, and can be edited with any text editor (such as Notepad or vi). The default locations are as follows:
