When trying to deploy from Application Administrator if there is a permissions or space issue on the call to AE from JBOSS then the errors in mashupmgr.log are not very informative. This defect is to request that the webservice fault is captured in the Application Administrator log.

After upgrade, some tables that are exported from the Application Engine have a Null value for the Value Display Format which causes an "Unexpected exception during FShell.ValidateApplicationInternal - Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error. Entering a Value Display Format value for all tables allows for validation to not get this error .
