This statement needs to be removed from the Composer Guide on page 265/66 see screen shot. Important: Do not include references to controls, fields, or other form artifacts in the JavaScript source code.
Hover help for multi select boxes in composer talks about how the text field will change to a single list box if the number of items is less than the list display size value. If you're using html 5 then this statement isn't true anymore. It doesn't matter how many items are in the list or how big the display size is the field will not show as a single column list box.
