Should a semaphore remain after applying a lock to a file?
No. A semaphore should be present ONLY when modifying the file to place the lock. The state of being locked is recorded in the archive as an attribute. So, if a semaphore remains after a lock is placed on a file, it indicates a problem with file systems permissions needed to delete the semaphore.
