The error will be passed back to the GUI, but currently only for pre- triggers. When you do this for post -triggers, the triggered code doesn't run but you don't get any warning.
As Version Manager goes through an Unlock scenario at that point, the Pre Unlock and Post Unlock triggers should get executed. However, in the 8.2.1 release this does not happen. The attached HotFix addresses this problem.
