CMS-XML SLM: How to access the Serena License Manager through a firewall / What TCP ports are used by the Serena License Manager?
Communication between Serena License Manager ( SLM ) clients and the SLM server requires two ports: one port to communicate with the generic FLEXlm server component that is part of SLM ("lmgrd"), and one port to communicate with the SLM -specific vendor daemon ("merant").
CMS-XML SLM reports: (lmgrd) EXITING DUE TO SIGNAL 15 or (lmgrd) merant exited with status 58 ()
In the example below the user dmsys requested a shutdown from the node haken-0, and flexlm simply obliged: 12:04:41 (lmgrd) Forced shutdown requested 12:04:42 (lmgrd) SHUTDOWN request from dmsys at node haken-0

CMS-XML SLM vendor daemon cannot use "localhost" as SERVER identifier
Unfortunately a bug in the FLEXlm code licensed by Serena, which the merant vendor daemon is using, prevents this from working. Instead of the hostname provided on the SERVER line in the license file, the vendor daemon always attempt to connect to the lmgrd process using the IP address associated with the hostname. Since that IP address may not be valid, attempt to contact the lmgrd process fail, yielding the following error in the SerenaLicenseServer.log file in the SLM directory:
CMS-XML Hotfix for SLM 2.1.5 on Windows when the license server becomes unresponsive and the merant.exe process uses near 100% of a CPU core
: VersionManager (UserID Access has been denied due to a licensing problem: FLEXlm code = -16 . Please contact your Serena administrator for further assistance.
CMS-XML SLM Error: Invalid license key (inconsistent authentication code)
On PCs this is often caused by adding an additional key to an existing license file after installing a network card, VPN software or virtual PC software, all of which will instantiate new MAC addresses which is what the FLEXlm core SLM is built on uses to derive the HostID from on PCs.
