Description

As of release 8.1.4.0, Version Manager officially supports the use of Sun JRE 1.6.0 in the web browser clients. However, a change introduced by Sun in JRE 1.6.0 Update 10 (1.6.0_10) causes a number of problems when that JRE is used with VM 8.1.4.x. The problem also exists in subsequent JRE 1.6.0 updates, such as Update 11 (1.6.0_11).

(Pre-8.1.4 Version Manager releases are equally affected. However, JRE 1.6.x is not supported on any of those releases, so upgrade to VM 8.2 or newer if you need to use JRE 1.6.x.)

When using JRE 1.6.0 Update 10+ with an unsupported/unpatched VM release, some operations will work, but others fails with error messages like:

FileEntityPath, Could not find a revision associated with the promotion group, null, in the archive "ArchivePath".

FileEntityPath, Could not find a revision associated with the version label, null, in the archive "ArchivePath".

FileName, Unable to access.  The filename may be illegal, the filename may already exist as a directory, part of the directory path may already exist as a file, the TEMP directory may not exist, or there may be insufficient privileges. Create archive <null\ArchiveName>.

Also, when trying to perform recursive Project  Database-wide operations like a mass Get, you may get errors message stating:

Action was not performed because there were no items to process.

Finally, when users of these JREs modify the properties of workspaces, values that are unset (empty) will be replaced by the string "null". If such changes are made to public workspaces, including the Root Workspace, this could affect all users of the Project Database, even after applying the patch. Such changes can be corrected by having an user remove the undesired values from the workspace properties. See KB doc S137680 for details. Note that this should be done after applying the patch.

Resolution

This issue has been resolved in the recently published VM 8.2.0.0 release. Users of VM 8.1.4.x who prefer not to upgrade to 8.2.0.0 at this time can download a HotFix from KB article P2470.

If you cannot upgrade to 8.2.0.0 or install the HotFix at this time, we recommend a downgrade to the previous JRE release, which is 1.6.0 Update 7 (1.6.0_7). This JRE can be downloaded from the Sun Java Archive.
